CORE STAGE
2 Cell Assembly

Updated 06/2025
Short Description
Cell assembly is the process of combining anode and cathode electrodes with a porous separator to form the internal cell —either as a layered "stack" or cylindrical "jelly roll." The stack or jelly roll is placed into a designated housing (pouch, cylindrical, or prismatic), and electrical tabs are connected to enable current flow. This stage is crucial for cell , requiring precise alignment, a dry room environment to prevent moisture contamination, and high levels of automation to ensure quality and consistency.

Sub-Processes
2.1 Separating (Pouch/Prismatic)
Electrode sheets are cut from continuous rolls into individual pieces based on the cell’s format and design. Precision cutting ensures consistent dimensions and prepares the electrodes for stacking or winding.
2.2 Stacking & Winding
Anodes, separators, and cathodes are combined into layered stacks or cylindrical jelly rolls. Stacking is common in pouch and prismatic cells and may include Z-folding, while winding is used for cylindrical and some prismatic formats.
2.3 Contacting
Metal tabs are welded to the anode and cathode sheets to create the cell's electrical terminals. High-precision welding minimizes contact resistance and ensures stable current flow in the finished cell.
2.4 Packaging
The stacked or wound electrode assembly is inserted into the final cell housing—typically a pouch, cylindrical can, or prismatic shell.
2.5 Electrolyte Filling
The dry cell is filled with liquid electrolyte under vacuum or pressure. This saturates all internal components and prepares the cell for activation and finishing.
