Battery Adhesive Tapes & Bonding Solutions

Adhesive tapes and bonding solutions are used in battery cells, modules, and packs to bond, seal, insulate, cushion, and integrate functional materials and components. Depending on the application, they can support dielectric insulation, flame resistance, thermal runaway mitigation, controlled venting, gasketing, cell bonding, and the attachment of thermal or structural barrier materials.

Several types of adhesive and bonding solutions are used in battery systems, each suited to different design and manufacturing requirements:

  • Dielectric insulation tapes: Provide high-voltage electrical isolation between cells, busbars, cooling plates, and enclosure components. Available in standard and conformable formats for flat surfaces and formed geometries.
  • Flame-retardant and thermal protection tapes: Address thermal runaway propagation prevention and cell-to-cell isolation. Includes ceramic flame barriers, flame-retardant bonding tapes, and materials specifically designed for bonding rigid thermal barriers such as mica.
  • Venting-support tapes: Seal gas channels during normal operation and provide controlled, directional gas release during thermal events. Used in cell venting strategy design.
  • Sealing and gasketing tapes: Seal battery enclosures or internal features against dust, moisture, and contamination while supporting reliable high-speed assembly.

The core functions of these materials include adhesion, sealing, insulation, protection, and manufacturability. In addition to joining materials, they can improve assembly speed, enable compact battery designs, and support safety-critical functions in both normal operation and failure events.

Pressure-sensitive adhesive formats eliminate cure times associated with liquid adhesives and reduce the need for mechanical fasteners.
