Specifications & Service

  • The ANDRITZ solution for battery recycling focuses on the efficient shredding, drying, sorting, and separation of black mass and other critical material streams.
  • The main output fractions include black mass (a mixture of graphite and valuable elements such as lithium, cobalt, nickel, manganese, iron, and phosphate), copper and aluminum from the electrodes, heavy parts like steel and copper from the housing, recovered solvents and electrolytes from the drying stage, and separator foil, which can also be used as Refuse-Derived Fuel (RDF).
  • Shredding: Discharged batteries are either disassembled or directly fed into the ANDRITZ two-stage shredding process, which includes a pre-shredder (ADuro C) and a fine shredder (ADuro G) for safe and efficient size reduction. The system maintains an inert atmosphere using nitrogen to prevent fires or explosions, leveraging ANDRITZ's expertise from fridge recycling.
  • Drying and Solvent Recovery: Shredded material undergoes vacuum drying below 80°C using Duesenfeld’s patented low-temperature drying process with the ANDRITZ Gouda Helix Dryer (GHD-LIB 4000) to evaporate low-boiling solvents. A cooling system is employed to reclaim solvents and minimize environmental impact.
  • Off-Gas Treatment: The off-gas treatment system uses activated carbon filters to remove volatile organic compounds and other contaminants, ensuring compliance with environmental standards.
  • Separation and Sorting: The process involves multiple steps to separate heavy and light fractions, including black mass, electrode foils from aluminum and copper, and separator foils.
  • This comprehensive approach not only maximizes the recovery of valuable materials but also minimizes environmental impact by reducing waste and promoting sustainable practices.
  • ANDRITZ offers a standard plant for 2 tonnes per hour and 4 tonnes per hour, but plants can also be tailor-made for customers. Pilot-scale testing is available, and products can be tested in the ANDRITZ Recycling Technology Center (ART) in Austria to validate performance and optimize processes.
  • ANDRITZ maintains a partnership with Duesenfeld, where selected process steps—such as deep discharging and low-temperature thermal drying—can be implemented using Duesenfeld’s patented technology as part of customer-specific plant solutions.
