Recycling Conveyer Solutions

Transfer materials safely and efficiently between processing stages within the facility.

2 selection questions answeredUsed in Mechanical Recycling

Overview

A conveying solution includes all necessary systems that move material from one machine (or process step) to another one. This means the need of different systems on different process stages. Possible conveying solutions are:

  • Flat belt conveyors
  • Cleated conveyors
  • Screw conveyors (augers)
  • Pneumatic conveyors
  • Chain Conveyors
  • Bucket or tipping conveyors
  • Vibrating conveyors (Optionally)

What to consider when choosing

What to think about when buying a conveying solution

  • Installation environment: Where will the conveyor be placed—indoors, outdoors, or in an inert or wet atmosphere?
  • Material condition: Is the material discharged or still energized? Is it wet, dusty, or prone to clumping?
  • Cross-contamination: How easy is the system to clean? Cleaning needs increase when switching between chemistries (e.g., LFP to NCA).
  • Maintenance and clogging: Consider strategies for dealing with potential blockages, especially when conveying fine shreds or sticky black mass.
  • Process integration: Can the conveyor serve multiple purposes (e.g., transport and dewatering using a dewatering auger)?

What to look for in a conveying solution

  • Material compatibility: Ensure the conveyor materials can withstand exposure to corrosive substances like electrolyte salts or solvent residues.
  • Electrical insulation: If handling charged batteries, the conveyor must include proper insulation to prevent electrical hazards.
  • Design fit for purpose: Conveyor type (e.g., screw, cleated belt, bucket, pneumatic) must match the specific material properties and desired flow (e.g., sticky, fine, or heavy materials).
  • Throughput capacity: System should be sized according to the required material flow rate and process timing.
  • Durability and wear resistance: Particularly important for abrasive materials like black mass or sharp-edged shreds.
