Battery Recycling & Reuse Process

Used or discarded batteries are collected from various sources. The collected batteries may be pre-sorted, assessed for 2nd life applications, and prepared for safe transportation to recycling facilities. Transportation follows strict safety and regulatory standards to prevent hazards.

Upon arrival in recycling facilities batteries undergo detailed inspection to identify damage, determine battery types, and sort them by chemistry or size. This ensures suitability for further processing. They are then temporarily stored in secure, fire-preventive facilities until ready for recycling.

Batteries are safely discharged or deactivated to eliminate any remaining electrical charge, reducing the risk of fires or short circuits. They are then dismantled, either partially or fully, to prepare for the separation of individual components.

After dismantling, batteries are mechanically processed—through shredding, crushing, or milling—to break them down into smaller fragments. The aim is to isolate key material groups such as metals, plastics, electrolyte and black mass for further refinement.

The separated materials undergo chemical or thermal processes to extract valuable elements. Chemical methods like leaching and solvent extraction recover lithium, cobalt, and nickel. High-temperature treatments such as smelting are employed to reclaim metals like cobalt, copper, and nickel efficiently.
